The sea
Above the Arctic Circle, the land is barren. The meeting of cold and warm ocean currents, however, makes the sea off Tromsø one of the richest in the world. In summer, the best fish is the Atlantic pollock, which is typically fished from land or from the numerous pleasure vessels plying the calm summer waters. The pollock is cut into pieces and boiled in sea water on the beach, and then served on buttered flatbread. In summer, you can hire your own boat and fish in sheltered waters or participate in an organized fishing trip. A favourite fishing spot of the locals, though, are the rocks along the tidal current of Rystraumen. If you don't catch anything here, you don't catch anything anywhere. For that big fish, like catfish, cod and halibut, go a bit further out. The biggest being out there, the playful sperm whales, are just for observation, though. They indulge on Greenland halibut at the edge of the continental shelf.
