It is only natural that a creative cultural town has established a lot of festivals with a broad-based cultural focus. Here you will find a celebration of classic and jazz, rock and electronica, international films and young people’s films, choral singing and worldly music – all in sweet juxtaposition. Each of these segments, and more besides, have their own dedicated festivals.

Rock is well tended for by Bukta (”Norway’s best rock festival of 2006”), held in mid-July. In the autumn, jazz makes an appearance. And around February, when the sun has just begun to come out again after the Polar Night, the Northern Lights Festival starts up, with classical music in the seat of honour. Both Bukta and the Northern Lights Festival are duly acclaimed internationally.

During the film festival in January, the city is teeming with activity. Many visitors are just as impressed with the street life, the cafe culture and the openness of the good citizens of Tromsø as they are with the films. There are lively festivals going on all year round – and the people of Tromsø participate with gusto. All you have to do is keep your eyes and ears open.
