In November 2006 the Port of Tromsø bought The Fortress of Grøtsund from the Norwegian Ministry of Defence. The fortress area is of totally 461 acres and is located 15 km north of the city centre in Tromsø. In addition, land will be reclaimed from the sea, so the area owned by the port will be expanded.

In addition to the fortress bought by the Port of Tromsø, the Municipality of Tromsø will buy the neighbouring area.

Grøtsund will be developed into an industrial area for large-scale and space demanding industry.

Major land reclaiming will be carried out and a new industrial port will be built. The new land in combination with existing land areas will make Grøtsund the ideal location for the petroleum industry and other larger entrepreneurial industries.

Contracts have already been signed by some companies.
