Tromsø is mainly a centre for education and research, with the world’s northernmost university as well as the University College of Tromsø.

Other research institutions include the Northern Lights Observatory, the National Centre for Telemedicine, the Agricultural Station and the Polar Institute.

Due to our position on top of the world, reading satellite data is a major industry in Tromsø. A large part of the Norwegian fish exports are sold from Tromsø. Fish products, beer and oil lenses are the products of our manufacturing industries. However, the biggest single employer is the University Hospital, servicing the entire north.
