Lyngen - Arctic Drama
The municipality of Lyngen rises like a peninsular fortress between the fjords of Ullfjord and Lyngen. Up to 1833 metres, or 6000 ft, its cragged, wild and majestic peaks, dotted with small, deep-digging glaciers rise directly from the Arctic Ocean, creating some of the most spectacular landscapes in all of Norway.
The sea around the mountains is teeming with life, perfect for diving and fishing. The people of Lyngen have three ethnic origins; the original Sami population, Finns looking for new opportunities in the 18th century, and the Norwegians who have seeped in slowly since the late middle Ages. Whereas most of the 20th century was spent forgetting the multi-ethnic origins and conforming to national cultural norms, the 21st century has created renewed interest in close to forgotten languages, craft techniques, costumes and music. Boundless hospitality and a contagious sense of humour, however, are common denominators across Lyngen.
