”The Northern Lights Music Festival”: Nordlysfestivalen

For more than twenty years, the city of Tromsø has been blessed with a musical extravaganza in the last week of January. The Northern Lights Festival has each year been presenting top artists from a wide variety of genres ranging from early music to modern, from opera to jazz, from chamber music to symphonic orchestras.

The long list of top artists that have visited the festival contains names like Norwegian musicians Leif Ove Andsnes, Jan Garbarek and Mari Boine and internationally renowned performers like Martin Fröst, Yuri Bashmet and Dee Dee Bridgewater. Including ensembles like Il Giardino Armonico and The Hilliard Ensemble as well as the symphony orchestras from Gothenburg, St. Petersburg and Oslo, this shows that the festival’s programmes have had an interesting mixture of top quality performances which also includes many artists from the north.

In addition, the festival contains spectacular outdoor events, lectures, exhibitions and other events like the Northern Lights cruise, festival pubs and masterclasses for musicians.

It is fair to say that the Northern Lights Festival is an art music festival of high quality with a programme that should be of interest for a wide-ranging audience.
