The use of pilot is in Norway regulated by the Pilots Act and legislations.

The use of pilot is compulsory for:

• all vessels exceeding 500 GT when under way in waters inside the baseline; unless otherwise provided
• single hull vessels over 100 BT carrying hazardous or potentially polluting material
• double hull vessels over 300 BT carrying hazardous or potentially polluting material

SafeSeaNet: ship reporting (SSN)

Is a European electronic reporting-and information system for vessel traffic. The Norwegian SSN-system generates automatic messages directly to the European central Safe Sea Net system, operated by EMSA (European Maritime Safety Organisation).

Reporting to SSN

• is compulsory for all ships over 300 BT
• includes all ships carrying hazardous or polluting goods, regardless of size.
• Pilot ordering can now be done through this system.

Deadlines for request of pilot services:

Pilot ordering shall be placed 24 hours prior to arrival at pilot boarding point. Accurate time shall be confirmed 5 hours prior, and finally confirmed 2 hours prior to arrival at pilot boarding point.
