The must-sees
The Arctic Cathedral dating from 1965, represents daring architecture right on the gateway to the city. The monumental 1972 stained glass window, representing the Return of Christ, fills white, barren walls with colour and renders the church warm and hospitable. The seals at the arctic experience centre, Polaria, are the mascots of the city, although one should not miss the film where the Little Auk flies along Spitsbergen as well as the aquariums with fish from the sea around Tromsø, including the King Crab.
The Arctic Walk shows you Northern Lights and ice-filled landscapes. Time your visit to seal feeding times. The University Museum and Tromsø Museum gives all the background for travelling through the north; the Sami history and current struggle for language and culture, archeology from the north as well as a highly valuable collection of medieval religious art. The favourite for many, though, is the Northern Lights machine, where you can make your own Northern Lights.
