The Arctic-Alpine Botanic Garden of Tromsø has plants from all continents, including the blue poppies from the Himalayas, the rhododendron valley, the primroses that thrive so well in Tromsø and the Lewisias from the Rocky Mountains. The plants of the traditional herb garden can be of great help, there are medicinal plants, plants used for black magic and aphrodisiacs. Tromsø's less celebrated churches are another source of beauty; the 1803 Church of Elverhøy has all the old religious art from all churches in Tromsø, right back to 1252. Tromsø Cathedral from 1861 is one of Norway's most monumental wooden churches. The little Catholic church of Our Lady provides a moment of silence in the big square of Tromsø. Visit the Carmelite Nunnery for morning mass, the singing of the choir will bring a chill down your spine.
