Wintertime in Tromsø is so much more than the Northern Lights flickering across the night sky and a beautiful and playful display in subtle and shifting shades of blue. And the Polar Night isn’t as dark as many believe. Even in winter, the tempting surroundings entice many to step out and enjoy an outdoor adventure. There are organized events and excursions galore, and you can choose the level of difficulty that suits you.
They say that Norwegians are born with skis on their feet, but it’s the foreigners who go all out to exploit the wonderful opportunities for skiing near the city. There are gentle downward slopes, but you can also make your way to the highest summits and race down the mountainside – all in a spectacular setting of mountains and sea. There aren’t many places in the world where you can peer straight down into the open sea from top-flight skiing terrain.
Year-round fishing is another attraction, even if it sometimes involves having to bore through the ice to let your line down through the water. The winter activities are many and varied, and they all offer you a good opportunity to experience nature at its best.
